Emily M. Bender is a professor and the faculty director of the Professional MS in Computational Linguistics program and the Computational Linguistics Laboratory at the University of Washington. She is also an Adjunct Professor in both the School of Computer Science and Engineering and the Information School at UW and a member of the Tech Policy Lab, Value Sensitive Design Lab, and RAISE. She has previously held temporary positions at Stanford University and UC Berkeley and worked in the industry at YY Technologies.

She received her Ph.D. from the Linguistics Department at Stanford University, and her AB (also in Linguistics) is from UC Berkeley. Her research interests include multilingual grammar engineering, linguistics in NLP/computation in linguistics, societal impacts of language technology, and sociolinguistic variation.
