Professor Jürgen Schmidhuber pioneered artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning. His main goal has been to build an AI more intelligent than himself, which has resulted in his lab's development of deep learning neural networks (NNs) based on ideas published in the "Annus Mirabilis" 1990-1991. His lab's NNs have revolutionized machine learning and AI. The CTC-trained Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) winning international pattern recognition competitions in 2009 and the DanNet becoming the first feedforward NN to win computer vision contests in 2011. His research group has also established the fields of mathematically rigorous universal AI and recursive self-improvement in meta learning machines that learn to learn.

His contributions to AI are numerous, including the introduction of unsupervised generative adversarial neural networks, formally equivalent to what's now called Transformers with linearized self-attention, and the formal theory of creativity, curiosity, and fun, which explains art, science, music, and humor. He has also generalized algorithmic information theory and the many-worlds theory of physics and introduced the concept of Low-Complexity Art, the information age's extreme form of minimal art.

As Chief Scientist of the company NNAISENSE, Professor Schmidhuber aims to build the first practical general-purpose AI. He is a frequent keynote speaker and advises various governments on AI strategies. With about 400 peer-reviewed papers and numerous awards to his name, Professor Schmidhuber is a revered figure in AI and machine learning.
